They would sold everything and anything that would give them a profit. The owner of this emporium was John Wanamaker, who was once a Postmaster-General of the Republic who changed that to become a business man and a pioneer in marketing. That is why this emporium caught the attention of a British writer.

Macy’s, Inc. started as a department store holding company in Columbus, Ohio including Abraham & Straus, F&R Lazarus & Company and William Filene’s Sons of Boston. It was founded by Fred Lazarus, Jr., who set up a modern merchandising standard in the mid-1930’s by arranging clothing in groups of a single size with a range of style, color, and price in that size. He created this technique based on what he observed in Paris. Lazarus even convinced President Roosevelt to extend the Christmas shopping season. He assured the President that changing the Thanksgiving holiday from the last Thursday of November to the fourth Thursday would benefit the nation’s business.
