Martin and many other civil rights leaders brought about 250,000 people for a march on Washington DC and there Martin did his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech in August 28, 1963. The most famous paragraph of Martin’s speech was, “I have a dream that one day my four little children will live in a nation where they would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Martin’s full speech was 7 paragraphs long! After the speech, Martin started to march and during the march he was arrested many times. In 1964, one year after the march and Martin’s speech, the government changed the law saying all segregation on religion and skin color could would no longer be legal. Because of Martin’s efforts to change the law in 1964, the same year when the law changed, Martin was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was the youngest winner ever. Death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin could have made more changes in the community but unfortunately in 1968 on April 4, 4 years after the law changed, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee at the Lorraine Hotel by James Earl Ray. James was a white man who did NOT agree with Martin’s speech. The sad thing here is that Martin was only 39 when he was assassinated. James was captured a month later and he was sent to jail for 99 years.
