As an undergraduate student in the Medill School of Journalism, I have had the privilege to see firsthand the school’s commitment to its quality of education. Each member of the school I have worked with, from professors to advisors to administrators, care deeply about the students within the program. Its commitment to providing real-world experience and knowledge to students has helped me gain professional experience and a greater understanding of the field of journalism. My four years have been replete with incredible professors, guest lecturers and peers. I look forward to the opportunity to work more with such a passionate school of educators. However, while I have focused primarily on science writing and environmental sciences in my undergraduate degree, I look forward to the new perspective provided in the graduate program on magazine writing. The structure of the Master of Science program is particularly unique to the Medill School of Journalism. The previous trips, from Medill Explores National Security to International Business Reporting in Japan, showcase the intensity of the education in Medill’s program and the possibilities for practical knowledge that the school provides. Each potential practicum or master’s project is equally enticing. A media practicum or embedded reporting would provide professional experience I am eager to learn from, as well as the student-initiated internships. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of journalism and the role of reporting through either the production of in-depth multimedia journalism or a by contextualizing my personal experience in the media industry at an internship
