Introduction
The fifth article evaluation assignment for MGMT 5306 is Building Effective Teams. Northouse Chapter 14 and Whetten Chapter 9 provided the focal point to derive an article with related material. I selected Building Effective Teams by Sonja Chamberlin and Meena Kumar. This article exhibits similar views and concepts as the assigned reading material.

Building Effective Teams start off by giving qualities that successful and effective teams have amongst members such as trust and mutual accountability. The paper then highlights key knowledge items that all team member should know about the organization to be successful. The papers give several pointers for the positive side of effective team building while acknowledging the need to face conflicts when they arise. Comparing this week’s work assignment to this article, I notice a linkage of several items. The comparable list that is closely related to parts of multiple theories in the reading assignment are forming; norming; storming; shared or distributed leadership; result-driven structure; competent team members; and collaborative climate.
Forming in the text discusses, “relationships must be formed and trust establish” (Whetten, 2016, p. 408). In Building Effective Teams, Chamberlin (n.d.) stated, “A team can be effective if there is trust and mutual accountability between the members” (p.1). Establishing trust is one of the vital foundation to creating an effective team. The paper stresses the importance of hearing all voices when a disagreement arises. All team member will not agree with every decision made. This is the best time to collectively talk about the pros and cons in order to select the best solution to the problem for the group. Shared or distributed leadership is closely associated with delegation in an effective team. The Leadership: Theory and Practice and Building Effective Teams, places a high emphasis on rotating leadership roles for team development as well as enhancement of individual on the team.
The paper used Mark Miller’s the secret of teams illustration to display his triangle for successful teams. The secret of team consists of skills, talent, community as the outside layer of the triangle and results in the center. All of the items come together to form successful teams. I notice a couple of items associated with Larson & LaFasto characteristics of team excellence to the secret of teams triangle.
To be a competent team member, you must have skills and talent needed for the job. Northouse (2016) stated, “teams should be composed of the right number and mix of members to accomplish all the tasks of the team” (p. 369. The right fit has to be formulated to accomplish any objectives or goals established. The lack of right personnel for the job could become a show stopper for
