What astounds me is he was able to paint the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling at that time, as there was no advanced technology to help him. He painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling by using his own designed scaffold. Michelangelo didn’t paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling lying down, as some claim. On the contrary, he painted in standing position in extremely uncomfortable conditions. He even made a humorous poem describing his grueling condition when working on his paintings on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
One could argue that this is the true start of Michelangelo’s career as a creator. Lorenzo de’ Medici offered Michelangelo the opportunity to live in a room of his palatial home. Medici surrounded himself with many influential and creative people and because of this Michelangelo was able to study with the a well known sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni. He was also able to gain special permission from the Catholic Church to study cadavers for insight into anatomy. One could argue that this work influenced many of his sculptures and artwork later on in his career.

In 1505, Pope Julius II brought Michelangelo to Rome to work on a tomb for Julius that he had planned, however two years later the Pope demanded that Michelangelo began painting the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo, would enjoyed sculpting, did not want to paint the ceiling and complained the entire time. But nevertheless he began his work, laid on a scaffold, and painted the ceiling of the Chapel, not knowing at the time that the ceiling for the Sistine Chapel would be one of his most talked about achievements. Pope Julius II had plans for a clean and straightforward ceiling, but told Michelangelo to paint freely and whatever he would like.

Michelangelo placed these figures around the edges of the ceiling and filled the central spine of the long curved surface with nine scenes from Genesis: three of them depicting the Creation of the World, three the stories of Adam and Eve, and three the stories of Noah. Witch later had to be removed due to a fungal infection witch got into the plaster by one of his assistants. He then fired all of them and completed the 65 foot ceiling by himself.
