The small business owner I decided to interview was Mike Mckay, who owns, along with his wife, Mad Dogz Hobby in Sandy, where they operate their business as a partnership. Located at 38250 Pioneer Blvd. Sandy, OR 97009, the shop offers a wide range of toys for the old and young.
Though he also has another location in Estacada. Mike didn’t have any prior experience before getting into this market. But after 30 years of working with vending machines, he grew tired and in 2012 decided to by the business from the previous owner who had started the business in 2010. Also they now offer service for the work on vehicles, and extra parts to their customers if in need. Though they sell toys, they mainly target 25 to 30 year olds. This is because the toys they offer are significantly expensive and require a bit of knowledge in order to correctly operate them. With this said, there are many out of this range who they still sell to. Some internal factors Mike says that he monitors closely is theft, because he has to stores it is hard to manage but he says it doesn’t significantly impact his business. Another thing would also be pricing, he struggles with this because depending on the price in which he buys his products, he reduces or increases the price at which he sells them to his customers.The external factors that significantly impact his business is the internet, this also compromises most of his competition. Because there are not many hobby shops in Sandy nor Estacada, his primary competition aren’t actual brick-and -mortar stores, it’s primarily the internet ( of which includes Amazon and Ebay) which can sometimes offer lower prices.
