Personality psychology is an area in psychology that examines personal traits and ways in which they vary among individuals. Personalities are characteristics possessed by individuals and influence their cognitions in a unique manner. The paper is going to analyze two personality assessment instruments, their benefits and drawbacks, and eventually compare them from their application in human life. The paper is going to address the following personality traits; Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory.

The initial authors of MMPI were Starke R. Hathaway and J. C. McKinkey. It is a copywriter from the University of Minnesota. The inventory has been used as a gold standard since it was invented. It was incepted in 1939 as a personality structure and an adult measure of psychopathology. The measure is dynamic, and many additional changes have been implemented over time. The MMPI is a reliable personality trait. Psychologists are using these scales to measure the depression level of patients suffering from the symptoms. In addition, the scale measures the emotions of a person. This has helped many people understand their psychological behaviors and areas which they should take control. The scale measures an individual’s need for control through the fourth scale. The other scale measures the level of stereotypes of individuals and how they are different from others (Cleveland, 2008).
The inventory has developed ten scales of the test which helps in understanding individuals’ behavior, and how it differs with the others. From the understanding, individuals are able to understand their personal traits and ways through which they influence their lifestyles. Personality traits are important since they define individualism. People from similar categories differ in their personality traits. Even though they cannot be changed, at least they can be modified (Cleveland, 2008).
