The Romeo and Juliet project inspired my group to modernize Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare through a series of text messages exchanged between the two lovers. My teammates and I chose this idea because it would really help the audience look at a new perspective of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship through a more modern lens. We also modified the idea of an original scene through the formatting; it was supposed to just be a script, but we decided to transform it into a little video. My group, including Daisy, Alana, and myself, encountered a few obstacles, but I loved how we continually worked as a unified front and overcame those problems. This scene takes place after Juliet learned about her arranged marriage to Paris and when Friar Lawrence came up with that bizarre plan. After hearing the news, Juliet turns to Romeo for advice and to inform him of the marriage along with the Friar’s plan, but he misinterprets the plan. Romeo thinks that Juliet is going to kill herself to be with him and he didn’t understand that she was going to pretend to be dead. On another note, this scene exposed the audience to a new modern world of Romeo and Juliet through new present-day technologies such as a phone and text messaging. Our intentions when writing this scene was to modernize Romeo and Juliet and give the couple a little more time to be and interact with each other since they didn’t have much time together. My group and I modernized Romeo and Juliet by changing the language, time period, and adding other factors that would appeal to modern society such as emojis. These components allowed my group and I to write a scene of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship in present-day to help the audience to look at a different perspective of the story. It’s not just a Shakespearean story anymore because we transformed it into a love story of two teenagers in the 21st
