Mrs. Kalleward's Impact On My Career As An Educator

A teacher is more than an educated presenter of information, and more than the sum of the information and abilities he or she possesses. It has often been said that a leader knows, goes, and shows the way, which can also be said of a good teacher, who is by any definition a leader (Maxwell, 2010, p. 34). Mrs. Kalleward is a teacher who had such an impact on me, and in many ways she began to shape my career as an educator by teaching me how to be an effective and productive teacher in many areas. I am certain that I am one of many students who share this opinion of her, and that is why I am recognizing her today. Mrs. Kalleward is a master of all three roles, showing respect for her students by providing them with a loving and caring environment, leading students by example, and teaching students about ethical matters within the classroom. Not only does Mrs. Kalleward respect her students, but she talks to them about what respect looks like in the classroom and ways they can show respect inside and outside of the classroom. She is a moral model by doing what she expects of the students and holding them to high standards. One example is when teaching writing, she models what good writing looks like while talking through her sentences. Once she releases the students to do their own work, she requires them to work a certain amount of time while doing their best quality work. She is also an ethical mentor by encouraging students to have positive behaviors at all times. This involves having classroom meetings on different topics that helps the students become closer as a group as well as, when needed, talking to students individually when they need extra support correcting behavioral
