In 2007, I, along with a few of my peers, founded the Little Lemon Drop Jr. Guild as a way to give back to our community. Since then, this nonprofit organization has raised thousands of dollars that has gone to support uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Throughout my middle school and high school years, I have been very involved with this group. When I had the opportunity to choose a service placement for this year, I immediately knew I would be doing my service through the Little Lemon Drop Jr. Guild because of my previous involvement with the guild and my passion for the cause the guild supports.
The organization, which I decided to volunteer two hours of my day to, was Cumac. Cumac is located in Paterson, New Jersey and they work to serve the people in the counties of Passaic, Paterson, and Northern New Jersey. They work with a staff of 21 and volunteers from all over to help people in need with food and supplies they would need to survive. Their mission statement is: “CUMAC feeds people and changes lives. It works to alleviate hunger and its root causes for those in need in Paterson, Passaic County, and northern New Jersey.”
Throughout my life, I have been quite active in several organizations. The first club I joined was the Hamlet Handy Helpers 4-H Club. As my project, I rented a farm and raised corn and soybeans with the goal to earn enough money to pay for my college education. I have learned a lot about business, finance, and agronomy through my 4-H projects. I have also learned how to confidently deliver speeches during the club meetings.
I have been able to help serve the poor in the community as well as focus on legislative goals. This is why I believe I could be of valuable service in not only getting your youth engaged in active community service but organizing it in a way that would truly help the community and leave the youth feeling deeply satisfied with their
I have a heart for community service which led to participating in city-wide advocacy campaigns. One of the initiatives was advocating with the Alliance for Quality Education for Universal Pre-K in New York City. I travelled to Albany, NY to participate in an education rally and spoke with my assemblyman Herman Farrell, on behalf of the families of New York City, to gain his support for UPK. Within a year the initiative was approved, and the following school year the UPK program was implemented. As a leader in the social justice ministry of my church I coordinated a Sunday, with the New York City Department of Education representatives, which allowed them to speak to our congregation of over 9,000 members, and enroll children into pre-kindergarten the same day.
These experiences led to service opportunities focused on team-based service and advocacy. I collaborated with individuals to sustain a tutoring program at my local Boys and Girls Club of America and started joining community-based organizations such as Kiwanis International. As time progressed, service participation throughout my undergraduate experience contributed to my desire to serve as an AmeriCorps volunteer. As an undergraduate, I took advantage of opportunities to mentor first-generation science majors and obtained the role as a resident assistant for the Civics and Service Living-Learning community.
According to our book, nonprofit agencies has 6 advantages over governmental or market-origin agencies: 1. It can help those that are in need because of market and governmental failure, for example, the near-poor population, by official standard they are considered above the poverty line, but maybe someone in the household is seriously ill, and the household is suddenly under the line, but still unrecognized by governmental and market-origin agencies. 2. Their primary motivation is to deliver qualified services, not to earn money or finish quota. This makes nonprofit agencies best for those that are too troublesome for other agencies, like disabled old people, they can deliver qualified services to them.
She explained that she was on her way to the bank to get a loan for her son 's communication device when she got a call from the HIKE foundation. It was extremely rewarding to be able to help someone in that way. Besides my love of community service, I have gained so much confidence in myself from my friends that I have met through Job 's Daughters. Ther are many opportunities to compete in public speaking, talent and pageant competitions. The first big competition I entered was the Junior Miss Oklahoma pageant when I was fifteen.
Other than participatie in school activities, I help out with my community. Through National Honor Society, we are able to find more ways to help with the
In high school I was a part of the National Honor Society, where I helped plan some of the events. One event we did was the orientation for incoming freshmen. I helped think of activities, such as a scavenger hunt, for the students to learn about the resources they have available to them. I also helped plan a fundraiser for our club. We were able to have Chick-Fil-A sponser our club.
I also helped run our school carnival and class booths. My suggestions that were used were the bottle flipping race and treasure hunt. As part of my responsibilities as class representative, I was responsible for getting supplies, setting up and taking down the game, and running the game when students came to play. I am a very good student, I have always earned 4’s and 5’s in every class, social skills, and work habits. I was also involved in a program called women in history at my school.
Dear Generation X Member: (I just changed this from “Service Learning Partner” because I thought that was who we were. If anyone has an idea how to word it better go ahead-Anna) We are very excited to inform you about an opportunity to be involved with United Way of Abilene. With your help, we are able to better the lives of hundreds of families in Abilene. As a non-profit organization, our main goal is to help families specifically in Abilene by providing better resources that may not be available without aid. Our mission is to improve education, health, and income for families who need it.
As a St. Olaf student, I aspire to participate in various clubs, community service opportunities, and study abroad. Over the past few summers, I have volunteered for a wonderful organization, Sports Made Possible. My first club softball team exposed me to this amazing organization at age 10, and eight years later I still take part as often as I can. We help special needs children play the game of softball. Being able to help these children participate in the sport that I love and seeing the smiles on their faces as they play, reminds me of how fortunate I am.
We planned events, raised money for charities, completed innumerable community service hours, and built a respect for our organization in the
In the first year, I was a part of a pioneering youth development team in Americorps NCCC Southwest Region. I worked with K-12 students in title one schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity, local non-profit organizations, The Red Cross and The Salvation Army. I spent my second year working with underserved youth as a volunteer coordinator for Reading Partners in DC. I learned about the struggles that the students I worked with dealt with every day. I was also able to interact with parents and provide resources for education, housing, food, and nutrition.
