My Leadership Role As A Peer-Instructional Coach

Presently, I am a Peer Instructional Coach at Creston Academy in addition to teaching 20 periods of 8th grade Science a week. I was granted this opportunity 2 years ago through the Teacher Incentive Fund.

My current leadership role has greatly impacted my decision to apply for LEAP. It has provided me with learning opportunities that have contributed to a deeper understanding and development of leadership skills. Leadership skills such as clear communication, questioning, patience, and sincerity are crucial among a school community. I have learned to be patient with people and not judge them. I remember when the Danielson Framework for Teaching Evaluation tool was at its beginning stages of implementation. Many people displayed a resistance to this tool. It was quite understandable since there was little education on how it was to be incorporated on a daily basis. Change can be overwhelming for both student and teacher. There is a current intervisitation protocol at my school that my peers and I developed that have led to conversations in school improvement. This protocol has made it easier to discuss and to build a “common picture” of what is happening in the classroom. Intervisitations are observations that are non-judgmental and specific as to what is being seen and heard during that time in the classroom. Explicit notes are taken during the observation. These notes, also known as low inference notes, are shared with my colleague through a debriefing process. It is followed by powerful and clarifying questioning that can aid teacher in developing better strategies and methods of implementation for student
