My passion for assisting others started with volunteering at group home while attending high school. Upon graduation, I perused my nursing degree at local community college. My most recent academic achievement was acceptance at Frontier Nursing University in their family nurse practitioner graduate program. Frontier was my first choice for continuing my education and I am very proud and honored to be part of this Frontier family. Frontier Nursing University has met and exceeded my high expectations for the program.

As a nurse working in this environment, it has helped shape many of my professional and academic goals and led me to Walden University.

On this day October 24th, 2016 many events happened at Jessie Trice Community Health Center (JTCHC). As usual, I was exactly on time to start my clinical rotation at 8 am. My rounds were made in the clinic looking for something out of place and improvise with my assistance. A morning huddle was hold at the nursing station. Everyone met to listen to the points Joel Polanco, RN would present.
I had the pleasure of interviewing an LPN named Bernadette Rogers which is employed at Northwell Health Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation. In this interview, I learned that a systematic approach to how you began your day can determine how efficiently you perform your job duties. In addition, there are several elements that surprised me about this position. The first thing was the two-week training period that she underwent. I would have thought that the facility would have provided a lengthier orientation for a newly graduated nurse.
Often in life, we come across situations that may stretch us and challenge us, finding ourselves forced to get out of our comfort zone. Volunteering is definitely not for everyone, people may not have the adequate time, confidence, knowledge. But that does not mean you avoid the situation at all times, you must allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone and experience things that you would never think about doing. On the first week of volunteering it was a bit intense for me, as I found it difficult and little bit sad to watch the women living the way they do, for some reason I felt that they were always missing their children and grandchildren. Some of the residents did not even have family so they never got visitations.
Barbara, the nursing coordinator, had given me an administrative task, I am supposed to input the number of nurses on the 7th floor for each day of January. The documents were confusing because the numbers were all over the place and I had a to scribe them onto a separate document. I kept on visiting Barbara and asking her questions about the documents. I soon understood them and was able to finish half of them and left the other half for the next time I come for the volunteer who will here the next day in the
Through thorough observation of my nurse in the community home health setting I have witnessed her fulfill many roles and functions. On October 27h, I had the opportunity to spend my clinical day in the Emergency Room, rather than on the floor on 8 South. I arrived at the site at seven and stayed until noon. I was introduced to the charge nurse Kim. Kim decided to place me with Megan for the day. Megan has worked in the ER for the past two years; however, she has worked at the VHA for the last 12 years.
I was given the privilege to shadow Kerry Pullman, RN on the Med Surge/Telemetry unit at Liberty Hospital. Kerry has been an RN for two years after four years as a certified nurse aid and 3 years as a licensed nurse. Kerry has been working on the med surge/ telemetry unit for almost a year after working in long term care, primary care, urgent care, orthopedics and surgery. When asked Kerry stated the hardest part of being a new nurse was “old nurses” she said that often the old nurses will “eat their young”. We started the day by getting report on Kerry’s patients from the previous shift then going over the patients charts to make sure we had all the information we needed for her patients to provide the best care possible.
