Introduction In this paper I will discuss the definition of nursing; my thoughts on what makes the Ideal Nurse, my own pursuit into the nursing profession, and how this can influence my career in nursing.
Nursing Definition According to the ANA, “nursing is the protection, promotion, optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (Masters, 381). I define nursing as the study of compassion, caring, listening, understanding, advocacy, and continued will to help others while focusing on the whole patient’s mind, body, and spirit. …show more content…

My experience being treated for cancer is what ultimately guided me into the profession of nursing. During my diagnosis and treatment of cancer, I encountered many wonderful doctors and nurses. The nurse’s and doctor’s who cared for me seen the person and not a patient. I believe being treated as a person the nurse’s and doctor’s focus was on my mind-body-spirit. I see nursing as my way of giving back and helping other’s through their tough times. While being inspired by the doctor’s and nurse’s during my treatment for cancer, they also encouraged me to join their profession. In 2006, after completing treatment I began my career as an LPN student at Flint Hills Technical College. I completed the LPN program in July of 2007. I began working in Pediatrics where I am inspired daily by many courageous children. In my daily work experience, I always strive to put my patient first. My current nursing experience is the Home Health setting. While working in the patient’s home the nurse must have excellent communication skills. The nurse is the patient’s connection to doctors, pharmacist, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and everyone who plays a part in the patient’s treatment plan. I must show knowledge and professionalism when communicating, so my patient receives adequate care. I also remember that families may not understand medical terminology and I must explain to patients/families by using terminology they can understand. Nurse’s need to take the necessary steps to research and learn information on new medication, new techniques or even a skills review, this helps the nurse continue to give adequate patient centered
