I can’t say I am the happiest girl taking this university 401 class. I’ll tell you why, I believed that I did well enough on the test to pass it. Yes I understand that my English needs improvement, but the WPE doesn’t only measure how well you write English it also has to do with working under pressure. I believe that me falling this test had to do with a little of both English and pressure.
I was raised in Mexico so I developed my first early writing experiences in Spanish. In Mexico I went to school from first grade to the fifth grade. I came to this country when I was twelve and was put in the six grade, even though my English wasn’t up to par. It was really bad, I mean I couldn’t distinguish a “Hello” from a “Good-bye”. I remember my teacher Mrs. Hira was confused and didn’t know how to approach the situation. The situation being me not knowing anything of English. She tried her best to educate me. As I remember my first English writing experiences were copying sentences from a children’s book in hopes that I would learn how to write, read, and speak the English language. In math it showed that I was in college level however when it came to English I had to take remedial English in order for me to advance to college level English. I had to take two quarters of remedial English. It wasn’t until my last quarter of freshman year that I was able to take college level English. I thought that I wasn’t going to worry about English anymore because my major was business, it had to do with numbers not words. I was mistakenly wrong, not only does everyone have to take the WPE, but also for my major it is a prerequisite I have to pass the test in order to take my upper level classes.
