Expansive knowledge and understanding of comparative leadership patterns is critical in international business (Mingji et al., 2014) The full range model of leadership provides a framework for exploring the role of the leader in a changing work environment (van Eeden, Cilliers & van Deventer,2008). The changes in cultural patterns and structures in business require leadership to be the center piece of transformation (Krantz, 2001). Mythologies have been defined as sacred stories that provide both cultural stability and dynamism across generations within a society (Mingji et al., 2014). Cultural mythologies, as they pertain to contemporary international business relationships, play several roles in cultivating decision making strategies and intercultural communication. Cultural mythologies mold global leaders by defining codes of moral conduct and beliefs to establish and maintain social order with contextual nuances (Mingji et al., 2014). They also provide a cultural bridge for global leaders to extend essential directions for cross-cultural comparison of individual agendas, for example the utilization of cultural mythologies to communicate organizational goals (Harnish, 2006). Cultural mythologies catalyze a broader historical discourse to make meaning (Mingji et al., 2014).
The study presents examples of how cultural mythologies play their roles. There is also evidence sharing with the readers how cultural mythologies can be shaped. The study mentions T.S. Eliot’s “Observation on Culture” which presents the argument that religion is one of the bases cultural myths. The mentioning of works that are not necessarily business related offers readers the opportunity to research the topic more in depth from a different perspective. This section defines the functions of cultural mythologies that were listed in the abstract. They are discussed in depth along with examples of each function and how they are based in each country. The first function contextual nuancing is evident in the four countries because the mythical heroes and leaders share the same leadership characteristics: compassion, caring, vision, intelligent, transformational, and strength to overcome obstacles and challenges on behalf of others (Mingji et al., 2014). According to the research the behavioral expressions of these mythical leaders unfold differently within specific localized historical trajectories which give rise to contextual nuancing (Mingji et al., 2014). There are two charts printed in this section. The first chart shows comparative aspirational leadership qualities from four sets of cultural mythologies. The second chart is of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions of the four countries. Hofstede’s model played an integral role in this study.
