In order to abide by the ethical standards put forth by the National Education Association Code of Ethics regarding student standards, steps need to be taken to fulfill this standard. First, a teacher must familiarize there self with the academic standards in their state for their content area. By understanding the standards the teacher will be able to develop an understanding of what their students are expected to learn. Next, they need to develop a plan to teach these standards to their individual students. While developing these plans they also need to create planned instructional supports to help struggling students develop an understanding. Also by creating appropriate expectations for students, it creates an incentive for them to work hard and achieve that goal. In the education system, the high achieving students are often the only ones rewarded for their work because they receive good grades, while the low achieving students or students with disabilities may work hard but not receive a high grade due to the overwhelming high expectations. When there is a lack of incentive for students to work hard they often won’t, and will instead revert to making excuses and in some cases deny the importance of learning due to the increased frustration of finishing below expectations. Although it may be tempting for a teacher to decrease the standards of a student in order for them to maintain personal incentives, it is against the ethical standards defined in the professions code of ethics. It is also important for teachers to issue appropriate expectations for their students in order to create incentives and motivation towards learning. By following the code of ethics in the profession and creating appropriate expectations for individual students they will be able to overcome this ethical
