However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. With significant wind, solar and hydro resources and a population that is becoming increasingly educated and passionate about climate change and energy efficiency every day, the future of clean energy in Nunavut is promising. As observed in southern climates, development of sustainable transportation policies is more difficult than those directed at electricity [2]. The goal for the percentage of energy use in transportation supplied from renewable sources is then lower than that for electricity, at 20% renewables by 2025. Much of this energy is used in the transportation of food from other provinces and countries. Even with food subsidies, over two thirds of Nunavummiut lack food security – access to safe, economical, and sufficient nutrition. On average, food in Nunavut is 88% more expensive than the Canadian average [4]. This lack of food security not only places a financial burden on families in Nunavut, but often restricts the ability of Nunavummiut to contribute fully to society by obtaining a high school diploma and working a full time job.
