Advancing nursing leadership
Nursing leaders are crucial to any nursing organization. They empower, influence, motivate, and communicate the organization’s vision to create change within the organization. This discussion will define my view of an improved healthcare atmosphere, outline the steps needed to begin this transformation and review my strengths-based assessment. It will also address the role my strengths play in leveraging change and reflect on the impact these strengths has on the team’s success.

The Full Range Leadership Model (FRLM) or the multifactor leadership theory is one of the most consistent and comprehensive models used to measure leadership (Bass & Avolio, 1993). This model encompasses both the transformational and transactional elements of leadership to include, building trust, acting with integrity, inspiring and developing others, contingent reward, and management by exception (Mackie, 2014). According to Gallup, a team is served well when there is a representation of strengths in each of the following four domains of leadership strengths: executing, influencing, relationship building, and strategic thinking (Rath, 2008). In a recent strengths-based assessment, I discovered my top five leadership attributes to be restorative, belief, futuristic, empathy, and relator. Presently, as a leader, I possess attributes in four out of five of the aforementioned domains. By nature, I bring my ideas to life and commit to doing things better in the future. As an effective leader, I must constantly investigate strengths, understand those I lead, and surround myself with people who will maximize the team. Although I possess a majority of the necessary attributes to be an effective leader, I must consider my heightened level of vulnerability as a leader who lacks the power to influence. Such vulnerability poses a great risk to my team’s success. It is imperative that I remain realistic towards the team’s goals while continuing to motivate and empower members to contribute to the team’s success.
