The NICU is a Neonatal intensive care unit is a special area for premature and sick babies, they go there to receive the help they need, and some babies need help to breathe or they are missing something in their body. At the time, my grand father was a holistic doctor at my local community. Whenever my grandfather went to work, he would take me with him and I remembered being very fascinated by how people would come in to get treatments for different kinds of diseases.
I just completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and look forward to exploring nursing theory, evidence-based practice and leadership even further in the advance practice curriculum. I am pursuing family nurse practitioner because it will allow me to be more versatile in my nursing skills and serve a larger patient population. There has been a focus on primary care medicine since the Affordable Care Act; resulting in a larger need for nurse practitioners required to care for this patient population. After the sudden loss of my oldest brother in 2011, my life changed in the blink of an eye. While trying to overcome this heartbreaking experience was one of the most challenging things ever faced with, his death soon turned into a true inspiration to me. Not only do I cherish all the memories I was able to share with him over the years, I soon came to realization that tomorrow is not a promise to anyone and to live life to the fullest. As the 6th child in a family of 10, I grew up witnessing the struggle that my parents went through to get us to where we are today. We came to America when I was five years old and we were stuck in a two bedroom apartment until my parents saved up enough money to move out. We were very poor and had very little money for food. Eating once a day was the harsh reality and the constant headaches from not having enough calories inside my system will always be in my memories. My brothers and I didn’t understand why the other students had better clothes to wear or why we couldn’t go on any fieldtrips.
If I could choose one word that would summarize the root of my motivation it would be this: mother. From a very early age, my mother taught me the importance, and the privilege of earning an education. She, having grown up in poverty, was persistent in her efforts to ensure her children developed a love for learning. This love has grown tremendously, and has led me down the path I am today. Currently, I am about to graduate with my Associates in Nursing, and it is a wonderful feeling to be accomplishing a goal that I had set.
Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home. As a young child it was extremely difficult to live with and watch my loved ones deteriorate as they got older, as their condition got worse and worse, and saw my mother having a difficult time keeping up with caring for both of my great grandparents 24/7, it put a lot of stress on the family. I have involved in Psychology research via PSYC 397 since Fall 2016, with Dr. Jasmine Abrams as my supervising faculty member. As a research assistant in the Global Community Health Promotion Network I have helped with research studies and interventions centered around HIV/AIDs and Cardiovascular disease, specifically focusing on minority women. My work involves collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative sexual health data, completing literature searches, and compiling psychological assessments.
