Cloud based applications such as Google Docs allows multiple people that are physically in different locations the ability to collectively work on a document at the same time (Olenewa, Olson, Olson, & Russell, 2017). This is a huge benefit in both the work force and educational settings. A great advantage with Google Docs and Office 365 is that these applications are web based, and no software is required on the computer (Winterberg, 2013). Google Docs takes this even further and allows a user to still look at the documents even when offline (Winterberg, 2013). Another aspect of Google Docs is the sheer number of people using this application; estimated to be over sixty million students and approximately two million companies across the globe (Olenewa et al., 2017). The team of writers collectively working on a project can become upset when one of the other participants makes certain changes to their contribution. Some people may even be embarrassed if their level of spelling is below the others in the group or simply not able to work as quickly (Olenewa et al., 2017). Trust can also have a negative affect in using Google Docs. Without trust in your fellow writers, fears of intentionally tarnishing the work because of a negative competition can destroy a project. Editing can also be a negative issue and cause tension among the users (Olenewa et al., 2017). A noteworthy issue to those who elect to use cloud-based applications is the need to have reliable Internet access. All members of the team will need this to maintain productivity (Winterberg, 2013). Finally, Google Docs or Office 365 does not require software to be downloaded, which can be a positive feature.
