CONSTRUCTED RESPONSE 1. Can you imagine living in a country where they limit the amount of kids you can have? Well, in China there is a one-child policy. Mao Zadong, a communist, made the one-child policy in 1980 and it wasn't banned until 2016. Is the one-child policy in China a good idea? The one child policy in China was a bad policy because the fertility rates started dropping before the policy, the amount of emotional damage it put on families, and how much only children suffered. The one-child policy was a bad idea because of the impacts on the before and after of the fertility rates. In document B we read that, "China had already achieved a remarkable fertility reduction, halving the number of children per woman from 5.8 in 1970 to 2.7 in 1979," (Document B). This policy is unnecessary because the fertility rates are already dropping naturally. Mao Zadong didn't need to put the one-child policy because it only dropped the fertility rates by 1.0, as the chart shows in document B. Also, the one-child policy was set in 1980 and these drastic changes happened before that year. In Document E it states, "Other significant emotional costs result from not being allowed to determine your family's size, being coerced into terminating second pregancies, or giving birth to a second child who is not allowed to enroll in school or to access the healthcare system," (Document E). Many families suffered from the one-child policy. Some couples couldn't live their dream of having a big family, or they would end up having to terminate their second child.
