Oxfam Personal Statement

The opportunity to gain admission into a culturally diverse and very dynamic institution is one of several reasons I have decided to apply for this MSc Sustainability program. In my tertiary years, I had the opportunity of accompanying my mother who worked for Oxfam leading a number of community development projects across the region. This rendered me the opportunity of interacting with people from what would be considered some the most remote areas in Zambia, playing with their children and leading life like they do for what would seem like a short period of time. Initially, I hoped I would work my way up to work for the ministry of finance in Zambia which would position me to have a level of control of the driving forces of the economic development of the nation. Unbeknownst to me that this would change and I would want to have a more active role in this growth. While a position in the government is still desirable, my current goal is to still be able to influence the decisions of the government and businesses with the expertise I hope to acquire over the years. This would be done sheltered under my own initiatives to empower the demographics at the bottom of the pyramid and particularly the poorest of the population. These are the people I hope to be the driving force of social innovative projects across the globe and a model that it can be done from the grassroots level and a call to action for the influencers of the economy. The ability to create from without while preserving what is around us is a potential driving force of sustainability that I intend to explore in this program. Other career goals I have, include personal entrepreneurial plans towards agricultural social innovation under a notion that I recently learned called sharity in which responsibilities are shared rather than having an employee-employer relationship.
