This report is going to focus on the security aspects of hosting a website and in general security implications of the World Wide Web. There are multiple security issues that are present when dealing with websites including malicious files, hackers and viruses.

Hacking is when someone with a malicious intend accesses your computer without permission. They may do this via a variety of methods such as hacking software. Hackers may be able to access personal images and documents when they access your PC. Firewall programs are usually included with antivirus software however they are two separate things. Windows includes its own firewall program called Windows Firewall. A firewall program set up a kind of gateway which all network traffic passes through. The program inspects the incoming and outgoing data and highlights and risky or concerning data. The traffic is inspected and managed by opening and closing ports, these ports in turn connect protocols and IP addresses together in order for data to be transferred. The W3C is an international consortium of companies involved with the Internet and the Web. The W3C was founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee, the original architect of the World Wide Web. The organization's purpose is to develop standards so that the Web evolves in a single direction rather than being splintered among competing factions. Complying with the W3C simply means ensuring a website meets the criteria set out by the World Wide Web Consortium.

When using the internet or hosting a website there is a lot of different legislation that must be considered and obeyed. One piece of legislation is the data protection act 1998. The data protection act applies to anyone that handles other people’s personal details. The Data Protection Act simple ensures that correct guidelines and measures are followed when anyone is handling another person’s data, be it a school or business. The act helps prevent information being viewed and accessed by unauthorised people and also helps prevent people privacy being breached.
Computer Misuse Act
The Computer Misuse Act 1990 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Critics of the bill complained that it was introduced hastily and was poorly thought out however the act is put in place to try to ensure people do not misuse the abilities of computers.
