1) Outline current legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures within own UK home nation affecting the safeguarding of children and young people: The United Nations conversation on the rights of the child 1989 which ensures that children are safe and looked after. Children have the right to be protected from all forms of physical or mental violence, abuse, neglect, exploitation and sexual abuse by those who look after them.

Children act of 1989 – Parents and professionals must work to ensure the safety of the child. Local authorities have a duty to investigate when there is a reasonable cause to suspect that a child is suffering or possibly going to suffer harm.

Education act 2002 – Requires school governing bodies, local education authorities’ settings to arrange safeguarding and promote child welfare.

Offenders act 1997 – This is better known to people as the offenders register and anyone on it must notify the police of any changing of names and addresses.

Sexual offences act 2003 – This covers offence committed by UK citizens whilst abroad. It was updated to include grooming, it also covers trafficking.

Safeguarding vulnerable groups act 2006 – This allows vetting staff and barring people who are unsuitable to work with children across the United Kingdom.

Data protection act – This places responsibility on organisations holding personal information to only be used if needed, it must be kept in a secure place, make sure it’s accurate and always keep it up to date. As a Support worker it is my responsibility to keep children safe from accidents, so we must do risk assessments to ensure where ever the children are and that they are kept safe within the environment that they are in. Also, it is my duty of care to ensure all resources the children are using are clean and safe and have the relevant safety
