In order to safeguard the wellbeing of individuals in care, the government have come up with legislation and policy framework to ensure their safety. I will talk about two pieces of legislation; The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 and The Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Scotland Act 2007 as well as this I will also be discussing two pieces of policy frameworks; Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) and ‘It’s Everyone’s Job To Make Sure I’m aright’.
The Children and Young People Scotland Act (2014) was first introduced on March 27th, 2014. The act was introduced in a bid to change how children and young people in Scotland are being looked after. By creating this, the government also enhances the right of children and young people in Scotland as well as inspiring the Scottish ministers to link these right to their practice. Looked after children are four times more likely to have a mental health disorder than children in the general population (NSPCC, 2017). Research by Loughborough university and the NSPCC suggested that the consequences of lack of support for looked after children can influence their mental health yet only 10% of the NHS budget goes towards mental health issues, this raises the question of what is being done to support the children in care, good mental health can impact the way a child handles the world, this includes how they are able to cope with significant things such as change etc. The children society runs some local services that can support children and young people even those that are care leavers or those still living in care.
