The definition I take away from the word culture is a group of people with the shared beliefs, values and practices. However, there are many different types of groups that have are cultured. For instance, and probably the first thought of culture when thinking about culture groups is religious cultures. But there are so many different genres such as national culture also known as foreign culture. There is ethnic culture or culture of diversity, pop culture, and even corporate culture. It just so happens to be a coincidence that over the weekend I attended cousins Bat Mitzvah. This is a Jewish ceremony celebrating the maturity of a 12 year old to 13. Since I was surrounded by my religion this weekend, I decided to pick the Torah as my artifact since it represents my religious culture.
The Torah is a scroll that can be found is any Jewish synagogue. A simple definition of a Torah is the Jewish bible. It is written in Hebrew on the skin of a kosher animal. The only time I really connect with it during special occasions like the one I attended this weekend. It is sad to say, but I usually do not go to the synagogue for Jewish holidays. This makes my mother sad because she always wants me to go with the rest of the family. I never took the time to understand why it was so important to my mother. In my eyes, she is not very religious. For instance she does not practice Judaism at home except for holidays. However, during this weekend and being able to reflect on it during this week’s theme of culture, it helped me to understand why it is so important to my mother. Instead of it being about our religion to her, it is a time where she gets to see and be surrounded by people that are very important to her.
