A Change of Pace Last January, my parents went to Mexico on vacation with some of their good friends. They were not able to take us because it was right as school was starting the second semester. This vacation was planned at the last minute, so they did not know what do with my brother and me.
Of course I thought it would be a great idea for us to stay home alone for the week, but my mom did not find that as appealing as I did.
“Sam and I can stay home alone. Everything would be fine and we can manage ourselves,” I said convincingly.
“Not going to happen,” she replied. She thought about allowing us stay with friends, but felt that it might be a bit intrusive to throw us into another family’s life for a whole week. They then asked my grandparents and they were available to come and stay with us.

I had arranged for a ride home so that my grandmother did not have to worry about it. Somehow my ride fell through and I had to call my grandmother to come pick me up.
“Hi, my ride can’t bring me home tonight. Could you come get me from Alex’s?”
“Of course, send me his address and I will be there as soon as I can,” she replied.
When she arrived, I apologized for the late notice and explained to her what had happened. She was not bothered at all by what had transpired and was actually happy to come pick me up. This is the moment when I truly realized how much my grandparents care about me and what they are willing to do for me. Although I did not understand it at the time, this week with my grandparents has actually been an important experience in my life. I learned about how much my grandparents care about me by taking time out of their life to come stay with us. The most impressive thing is that they did it with a smile and were happy to take care of us.
