Even as a child, the world of medicine fascinated me, whenever a friend or a family member fell ill, my first response was to question what was wrong with them, how it happened and how they could be made well again. I had a naturally caring yet inquisitive disposition and this drove my interest in medicine. It came as no surprise to my family when I, therefore, told them that I wanted to be the first of our family to become a doctor. They fully supported this and encouraged me to apply myself to my studies in school. This hard work paid off in the form of strong grades and I was well-placed to successfully apply to medical school.
It was during my MBBS program that I was exposed to the diversity and complexity of pediatrics and instantly felt drawn to the specialty. Not only to pediatricians need an advanced level of diverse medical knowledge, but they also need the skills to communicate with children who are often scared and unwilling to cooperate. Pediatricians complete their procedures as quickly as possible, with the patient at the forefront of their mind, they try to avoid using invasive procedures to avoid causing additional stress. I wanted to benefit from a more advanced medical knowledge, better quality resources, and wider opportunities, I believed that this would enable me to become a more highly skilled pediatrician. With this in mind, I made efforts to become a more suitable applicant for a residency program, by completing my USMLE examinations, on the first attempt. I also secured an abundance of clinical experience that has helped me to form my long-term objectives, while allowing me to understand the US healthcare system and how this differed to the healthcare system of my home
