Personal Statement

I was introduced to my love of watercolor and paints at a young age. The idea of making a complete mess while creating art was simultaneously the most exciting thing for me. Now, I am nineteen years old and painting is still something I find to be so rewarding. Within these past couple of years, I have come to the realization that art has helped me develop into who I am today.

There are extensive changes that occur in art classes throughout elementary, middle, and high school. They have become more challenging for me, but you do get more artistic freedom. Ordinarily, elementary and some middle school assignments will have strict requirements that all students must follow. This allows students to make a decision to choose what class they feel they would enjoy best in order to gain dedication to that subject of art. This is when I discovered that I liked painting the best. I made the decision to take a drawing class that I assumed I’d enjoy only to find out that I didn't. When I tried painting the next semester, it was the only class I was excited to attend every day. I put hard word and a lot of time into all of my art, which always gave me a feeling of accomplishment when I was done with my masterpiece. In, “The Washington Post”, writer Lisa Phillips states that once one has gained dedication in something, “They practice developing healthy work habits of being on time for rehearsals and performances, respecting the contributions of others, and putting effort into the success of the final piece” (Top 10 skills children learn from the arts). Coming from personal experience, I strongly agree with this statement. This tells that art isn't just something kids are taught to have fun, but it does help with development throughout a child's
