When I first started to understand the concept of math in elementary school, I realized how much I truly disliked the subject. Even though I noticed that I was pretty good at the subject, the older I got, the more I began to dread the concept of math. I just did not feel like math could be useful for my future in any way, since none of it applied to my life back then. It was all useless calculations with no meaning. The problems had no meaning, and neither did their answers, giving me that feeling that the subject was just another form of busy work which teachers would give us back then. Calculus had completely changed the definition of math in my eyes, and I finally began to understand the purpose and reason for all the tedious, step-by-step, math work that I had been doing my whole life. I began to understand that all of those “useless” and annoying skills which I had learnt in my past math classes had been like scaffolds or tools which were necessary for me to be able to build something with Calculus. After beginning to slowly immerse myself into the studies of Calculus, I felt like I had been stunned. Every time that I left my class, I felt like my I had just been enlightened with concepts that were just greater than what my mind could take, but why did Calculus have this stunning effect on me? To make it simple, the cause of this effect revolved around the fact that math had completely shifted from consisting of unmeaningful topics to critical thinking concepts that applied to my everyday life. The combination of the abstract and out of the box thinking that occurred with the fact that all that I learnt could be applied to almost any daily activity in my life truly created a new enthusiastic look at math. For starters, Calculus open my mind in ways that it had never been opened before. By introducing myself to topics of Calculus, it changed the way that I look at the world. For example, ever since I began to learn about Calculus, I have been noticing how it applies to daily activities in my life which I had never even imagine before, such as noticing how certain topics discussed in calculus are currently taking place while I am driving or playing soccer. Furthermore, Calculus has developed a feeling in my mind that I am so small compared to the world. Noticing calculus in everyday aspects of my life made be feel like there is so much more out there in the world that I just can't realize or see because I just haven’t learnt about it, making me feel like I am so small compared to the limitless world there is out there that is still blind to me. Apart from opening my mind, Calculus has allowed me to learn how to think in a more critical way when solving problems or situations that are not even related to calculus, allowing me to achieve a higher sense of mental sophistication that I had before.
