Personal Statement: A Career In Early Childhood Education

I have always found joy in bettering others as well as myself. I found an outlet to capitalize on that love my freshman year while in study hall. Our teacher had asked if anyone would be interested in going down to the elementary to help first graders with their reading skills. I was quick to volunteer and enjoyed every moment of it. I found great accomplishment in being able to make a difference in those kids lives. After my freshman year was done, I was no longer able to give up my study hall up to go read with those kids. I began, then, to look for other ways to help. It was during that search that I found the Friends Program. I joined my junior year and I have not regretted a single moment since. I love the ability it gives me to work with children and help them and myself become better. I’ve been able to mentor two different children, and I’m still in contact with both of them. I will, in my adult life, hopefully be able to adopt a child. This will give me the ability to be a life long mentor to a child in need. Also in the more near future, while I’m in college, I want to find an organization much like the Friends Program. An organization where I can help make an impact on a child's life. I will be attending college at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota to major in marketing with a minor in psychology. One of the main reasons I choose to minor in psychology is because I want to better understand children and their development. This love and passion was kicked off by my involvement in the Friends Program. The organization has truly taught me the impact I can have and the good I can do. I know how meaningful I can be in the life of a child, and I want to continue that, as it not only helps myself, it helps the child, the community, and in the end the world.
