Growing up in a family with a long and proud agricultural heritage, I always knew the importance of the agriculture industry. I often spent my summers visiting my grandfather’s ranch or following my agriculture-teaching father around. So when it came time to choose my career path, there was no doubt in my heart that my role was to continue the agricultural legacy of my family. However, I knew my place was not plowing in the fields or in a high school classroom. Instead, my love of story telling called me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in agricultural communications. The experience I do have comes from purposely taking internationally focused courses and interning with Buckner International. Taking international public relations, I worked with a team to create a campaign aimed at reducing the amount of littering in Lagos, Nigeria and conducted a solo research project exploring the cultural attitudes of Sri Lankans toward journalists. My other efforts include creating an advertising strategy for a micro-wind turbine in Croatia, researching the history of organic food trends in Germany, and writing a news article about attitudes toward Islamic religious attire in the workplace. Interning at Buckner International, I had limited experience with international communication but I was able to see firsthand how international organizations work to maintain a cohesive communication plan. While these courses and my internship helped me establish a foundation of knowledge, I know I have much to learn about communicating on the global scale. This pairs perfectly with my goal to work as an international communicator specializing in developmental issues. What solidified my interest in the university was the atmosphere of the campus. When visiting, I felt warmly welcomed by everyone I met, from students to faculty. The interactions I had helped me to feel welcome and to understand the close-knit community of the university.
