Personal Statement: A Career In Special Education

"Wait! What are you saying?" as I stood there in incredulity as my high school math teacher told me I failed her class. Screaming, crying and fighting ran through my mind simultaneously; instead, I calmed myself and gathered my thoughts about what to do next. A deep breath oozed out of my mouth and someone said, "You can always go to summer school!" In that instant, my dreams seemed to come out of the grayscale color they quickly changed into, and back to the vibrant full-scale spectrum of vast colors that I envisioned for my future. I succeeded in summer school, followed by a bachelor's degree and some years later, two master degrees. I commenced teaching in an urban middle school that had not been accredited in over 10 years. This school’s clientele was statistically challenged by their socioeconomic status, negative generational cycles and the surrounding precarious neighborhoods. Despite all of these disadvantages, this is where I flourished; I was a special education teacher and loved it! This is where I found my groove and became fully invested in making sure all students were afforded a quality education regardless of the statistical and economic status of the school or community. While teaching, I was able to actively see the power of a good education for students who were ‘at risk’, who then moved to ‘at promise’. There I became a teacher leader in the building with various leadership positions that assisted with leading the school to accreditation where it not had been for over 10 years. Every five years I create my vision board, my doctorate has been on several and pushed back and taken down. Well, not anymore; I’m have begun my journey. Professionally, a position in administration and/or supervision, creating curriculums or a special education educational specialist would be ideal. I would also love to possibly teach overseas. Personally, I would eventually like to assist with or opening my own charter or private school.
Northcentral and Me: How will My Program Help Me Achieve my Goals? This program will allow me to pursue leadership positions, curriculum development opportunities and as an educational specialist, I will evaluate and support teachers to improve their delivery of instruction.
The NCU Doctoral Process: How do I Feel About It? Northcentral University was recommended to me by a colleague. She has sung its praises and thought it would be a great fit for me. I must admit initially I was and still am intimidated of this entire process. It’s exciting, but yet scary that I am chasing after another dream that I am going to fulfill.
