Personal Statement
The University of North Texas (UNT) Dallas College of Law's location, in the heart of Dallas, and its accessibility from Waxahachie is a major draw for my selection of this specific school. In addition, I’m drawn to the diverse student population that the school targets in their recruitment efforts and the innovative manner in which the school aims to educate its students through hands-on education and not just lectures. My desire upon graduating from Law School is to return to Ellis County, where I spent my youth, to continue the law practice, with my parents, for the goal of marrying my law services with my drive and passion for giving back to the community. Learning by doing: this philosophy and education method is applicable to so many areas. I personally use it when teaching my Cub Scout fifth graders. Unlike their daily lessons in class where they are instructed, and demonstrated lessons only to then go off on their own to apply what they've just learned, I work to let each of the kids engage in hands-on learning so that they take some ownership and gain experience in what they are being taught. This methodology is one of the fundamental reasons I have chosen to apply to UNT Dallas College of Law. Practical knowledge and experience go a long way when it comes to understanding a career in law. Too many times, students are educated and pushed out into the marketplace without any true skills or practical knowledge and experience. This became more profound to me while I was assisting with reestablishment my parents' law office, after a fire in 2011, and filling in when needed as staff were out over the past several years. Continuously, I had experiences with members of the community that were in need of legal advice and services but did not seek them due to the great expense. It is this conundrum that led to further reflection, discussion, and possible solution forming, birthing the concept of creating another form of compensation/reimbursement for legal services.. As legal service fees continue to go up, I feel it is the responsibility of those serving the community to come up with innovative ways to provide services to those in need with a just manner for compensation and pro bono
