Studying art in Barcelona is the perfect program to compliment what I have done in college so far and my goals for the future. Before college, I had a concentration of Art where I spent at least 2 hours a day in class for 7 years studying 2-D art, 3-D art, and Art History. When entering college, I thought I would major in art, but after discovering the Residential College, I decided that I wanted to focus on studying psychology and community. I took art classes and developed relationships with the art teachers to incorporate the subject into my future career aspirations. I am a Biopsychology, Cognition and Neuroscience major with minors in Entrepreneurship and Community Action and Social Change. I will go on to get my PhD in Psychology and Social work so I can be a professor, researcher, and program implementer in Black cities with low socioeconomic status. I want to expose youth to mentorship and art (visual, theatre, dancing, etc.) while giving them a chance to see places outside of their cities to help them deal with community violence and overcome obstacles that usually accompany being a minority with low SES. I want to start a community center that gives students a home from their home. This center will also be a place where students can learn about different careers and possibly visit college in places that they otherwise couldn’t afford to visit on their own. By going to Barcelona to study art, I will not only have a deeper knowledge of art, but I will also have a more global perspective to help youth. Before thinking of studying abroad, I simply wanted to take students to other cities in America. After really considering studying abroad and the advantages of it, I would also like to take students around the world because the world is bigger than their neighborhood, city, and even country. There are a world of possibilities out there and I want to be able to experience these opportunities so I can help students from backgrounds similar to mine realize that there is a way more to life than what they’ve
