In Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” the main character is told “Aim small, miss small.” Aim for a button, miss by two inches. Aim for a shirt, miss by two feet. While the context is different, the spirit of this statement rings true when thinking of my life goals. Meaning that by dreaming big, I will achieve much more in life than I ever would if I consigned myself to a moderate life goal (e.g. climbing the corporate ladder). Therefore, I want to do nothing short of change the human race, and the world at large, for the better. I want to aid in solving some of our biggest problems, such as global warming and over-population. I want to make breakthroughs in scientific and social progress. Most importantly, I want to ease the suffering of every human being on the planet.
Many would say that these goals are unrealistic, and perhaps they are, but that is exactly the point. By aiming high, I will reach greater heights. I believe my background in psychology will give me a unique perspective going into the field of nanotechnology. This can be invaluable when the need to think outside the box arises, as it often does in science and new industries. Consideration of how people interact with new technology can even be equal in importance to the technology itself when ensuring success in industry. However, my degree is also a financial burden.
