Steve Jobs, one of the greatest technological minds of the 21st century, wanted to build an empire. Even though he started in his garage, nothing stopped him from getting where he wanted to go. Why we do what we do has been a constant question asked over and over by philosophers, because it is impossible to know for sure what makes each individual strive for different things. For example, what made one person chase after an art career while someone else with almost the exact same background wants to be a lawyer. Each human mind has developed into an enormously complicated snowflake and for each individual person motivation differs. I think, again, the most important motivator for me in my future academic endeavours is drive. In the video, “Drive the surprising truth about what motivates us” they show that, “[When] the task called for even rudimentary cognitive skill a larger reward led to poorer performance” (Pink) When rewarded for the task the success and creativity would decrease but if not offered a reward people just did it because they wanted to, and quality of work was better. I am driven to do well in school and it is why I take advanced classes it is why I will continue to push myself all through college. A second way that I will stay motivated in my future career is through my need to belong and the psychological mammoth that we see in the article “Taming the Mammoth”. I will use taming the mammoth and controlling it to become a better leader and more adventurous, vocal student this will help me to move forward in my educational career. By working to control my mammoth and not caring about other people as much as I care about myself, I will be able to be more confident and happy. In the article “What Truly Motivates us…”, Locke talks about how being motivated by sense of belonging can have a negative effect and motivate us to not participate in order to belong. A third way for me to achieve academic success is through optimal arousal. I want to experience more things outside of school and broaden my horizons so that I can find my optimal point of arousal and from this I will be a more effective student inside the classroom. In the crash course video Hank Green talks of how it is important that we are not bored but also not stressed and I think my finding this right balance for me I can be a better person all around (Green).
