Personal Statement: What I Bring To The Diversity At UNM

What I Will Bring to the Diversity at of AIMS Diversity; what does this word mean? Diversity is the state or quality of being different or distinct. Diversity in a community or in a school is almost always a good trait showing that there is variety of cultural representation. Particularly in schools, the mixture of perspectives, interests, and experiences can promote the quality and depth of effective education. Diversity has encompassed and intertwined itself with my life and is bringing change to my life continuously. Both my parents were born in India and grew up there. They migrated to the United States of America for higher education and professional career. Their language, traditions and their culture influenced my life and has opened up my views and perspectives of other cultures. I am able to welcome and appreciate people from varieties of backgrounds. This open attitude has improved my perspective of the world. With my

Throughout my life, I have seen that language, culture, and traditions that I have are unique and diversified. By joining hands with other students at AIMS@UNM I could diversify myself and others even more. Language has had a key factor in my diverse lifestyle. I have been submerged in many different languages from the time of my birth. I learned how to speak Bengali (the official language for the state of West Bengal, India and for the country of Bangladesh) when I was very young. I learned English later on. Nowadays, I can understand and speak parts of Spanish and Hindi (India’s most common language). I have been also learned much about religious diversity throughout the course of my lifetime. My family follows Hinduism but respects the beliefs of other religions. With all of this affiliations, I also understand world geography, political geography and cultural geography better which helps me communicate better with people from other
