High School Start Times Beep! Beep! Beep! I look over at my alarm clock, and see that it’s 6 o’clock in the morning. Today is a school day, so I have to get up and get ready for school. I get up, eat breakfast, and prepare for a long and tiring day at school. In the US, most high schools start at times like 7:15, 7: 25, or 7:30 in the morning. Many people across the US are now fighting to push school start times later in the morning, because of new studies that prove that teenagers benefit more from later school start times. Eastern View High School should have a later school start time, because teenagers will get more sleep, perform better in school, and improve the safety of teenagers. The first reason Eastern View should have a later start time is, students will get more hours of sleep. Students aren’t getting the sleep they need with the early start time. It’s known that many teenagers die from car accidents every year. Pushing the start of school to a later time helps improve the safety of students by decreasing the rate of car accidents. Results of a study on a school district in Fayette County, Kentucky, show a decrease in car accidents for 16-18 year-olds, while there was an increase of car accidents for 17-18 year-olds in the rest of Kentucky. A later school time can help prevent accidents form many reasons. Later in the mornings, students are more alert and efficient, and it’s usually lighter outside. Also, most early commuters are already at work, and traffic starts to ease later in the morning. Even though there aren’t many improvements, it can help prevent car crashes. In conclusion, Eastern View should have a later start time, in order to help prevent car accidents, which can be life or death
