This topic is real and occurring all around us. What most do not understand is that it doesn’t just happen in third world countries. The truth is that it’s happening right in our backyards. Within the U.S. alone, the state of Michigan is ranked number two for recorded accounts of human trafficking. We need to wake up and educate ourselves to this increasing predicament that is happening to our friends and neighbors.
Human trafficking has subcategories which most people don’t realize because most are uninformed. Children, sex and forced labor are all a part of what is labeled ‘human trafficking’. The scary part of this issue is how easy it is for people to get ‘picked up’ and disappear with no one realizing that they are gone and able to do anything about it.
Many sex traffickers target poverty stricken areas with communities that are hurting because they know that these girls or women are more vulnerable. A large percentage of the cases in Michigan are focused in the areas of Grand Rapids and Detroit. These are both populations that deal with largely diverse communities. Prostitution and sex trafficking are different situations. Prostitution is when the person chose to partake in selling their body, not always because they wanted to but maybe because they found no other way to survive. Sex trafficking is when the person is trapped into a situation and the perpetrator sells their body for money or possessions. Framing the situation in the wrong way can lead to many misconceptions. Some individuals just assume that people get what they deserve and because they chose the situation that they got themselves into, they will just have to live with that choice.
