Texting and driving among teens is alarmingly common. I believe the reason for this is simply because so many of today’s teens fail to realize just how serious it is to do so. I used to fall among this category of teens, brushing of the abundance of warnings I had heard via commercials, parental lectures, and pretty much everywhere else. I disregard each one and assumed they were all overreacting considering how harmless it truly seemed to me if I sent a quick “On my way” text to a friend or a “Be home later” text to my mom as I drove along. It was in this moment that I realize how crucial it was for me to lose my “it won’t happen to me” mentality, because it can and if I do not stop texting and driving, it will. It was also in this moment where I looked at the bigger picture and realized that from the moment I got my first phone and sent my very first text message, there has never been a single message that I would consider to be more important than someone’s life. And finally, it was in this moment that I realized just how selfish I had been all this time for deciding to text and drive. It was not just my own life that posed the threat of affecting all those times, but also the lives of all the others on the road, as well as my loved ones, their loved ones, and anyone else who may have to receive that phone call. I hope that someone else’s moment, the moment where they decide to ditch the habit of texting and driving for good, is the moment the moment they read this essay because moments like mine are much
