Drinking and driving is a major problem throughout the world today. Thirty one percent of traffic related fatalities are related to alcohol (Crashstats). A driver with a BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of 0.10 or greater is seven times more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash than is a driver who has not consumed alcoholic beverages, and a driver with BAC of 0.15 or greater is about 25 times more likely (Verywell). Each year, the deaths related to drinking and driving increase from the year before. One of the main groups is Mothers Against Drunk Driving. MADD is a widely known organization that was established September 5,1980 in California. Their goal is to stop drinking and driving as a whole and prevent more people from dying everyday from alcohol related fatalities. The organization was created based upon the consequences of drunk driving, that caused the founder’s daughter to die at a very young age due to someone’s drunk driving actions. This foundation is there for many reasons. MADD not only helps prevent drinking and driving, it reaches out to the victims and families of victims of drunk driving. They ask for donations, volunteers, and people to walk with them throughout their goal to end drinking and driving. The families of the victims fight for the justice of their lost ones, and victims themselves who were injured due to drunk drivers also participate to fight for the ending of drinking and driving. MADD’s mission statement is “To aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to aid the families of such victims and to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving." Even if someone has never personally been affected by drunk drivers, anyone can still join this fight against it. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, they have helped save over 330,000 lives.
