One of the most controversial issues today is the issue of gay marriage and its recognition. The recognition on marriage is important to homosexuals for several reasons. There are a multiplicity of rights that only married couples receive. These right include but are not limited to inheritance of property, receiving benefits on your spouse’s behalf, obtaining insurance through your spouse’s employer, visitation in ICU, and much more. In addition, they believe that the government has no right to infringe on their pursuit of happiness by refusing to recognize gay marriages. While there may be more than three, the three that are listed are the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Restrictions have been place on all three, but only to prevent people from infringing on others’ rights. Society is fine with these restrictions because once a government is adopted, the government and the governed enter a social contract theory in which the governed relinquish some of their freedom in exchange for security and order from the government. The problem comes along when government oversteps their bounds. Government’s job to protect the right of the pursuit of happiness can be interpreted two main ways: it is government’s job to make everyone happy, or, government is to give everyone the equal opportunity to be happy. The second interpretation is the most appropriate because the best judge of happiness is the individual, and it would be impossible for government to efficiently find out what makes every individual in a state or the entire country happy. This second interpretation is the premise for rights. Government’s job is to give everyone political equality; this is what keeps people and government from infringing on others rights. However, the system is not perfect due to biases and underlying motives. This is one of the reasons that homosexuals are so upset. A lot of people are saying “If the definition of marriage is changed to include gay marriage, what will stop it from being changed to include polygamy or incest?” The difference between polygamy, incest, and gay marriage is that the latter is not a danger to society. Polygamy is illegal because it is considered unsafe; if one spouse unknowingly contracts a sexually transmitted disease, then it will be spread more rapidly because of the multiple spouses and that doesn’t include if adultery is practiced. Incest is also a danger to society because it is known to have strong chances to produce defects in children. These defects tend to be mental but can also be physical. These two practices actually pose a threat to humanity. On the other hand, gay marriage does not pose a legitimate threat to society, it is simply frowned upon. The biggest threat that gay marriage poses is the possible production of gay children through rearing by two homosexual parents, and this isn’t even guaranteed to happen. This would increase the gay population but the number of straight people would still be larger seeing that heterosexual couples are the only ones that can reproduce (excluding surrogate mothers and insemination for lesbians).
