Although some Americans believe LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people should not have certain rights, the government should make LGBT discrimination illegal because LGBT people should be equal to non-LGBT people, LGBT people deserve of live safe and happy lives, and because LGBT have a long history of oppression in the United States and have definitely earned the rights they should have always had. Some people believe that having to serve or work with or rent homes to LGBT conflicts with their religious freedom, but the LGBT community argues that since there is a separation of church and state that should not be a reason to exclude LGBT people. Homosexuality was considered a mental illness in the US from 1956-1973, queer people have always faced discrimination and the stigma around gay people has lessened a lot throughout the years, but it has not gone away completely and that is why we need laws that protect LGBT people. The Gay Rights Movement started in 1969 with the Stonewall Riots, these riots were the beginning of what was to be a long and difficult battle for equality that is still going on now.
