Every four seconds, a person dies from starvation. That is approximately 21,000 people a day. This statistic does not even take into consideration the number of people who are in a bad condition, and undernourished due to poverty and starvation. However, there is a solution to solving this starvation problem: GMO foods. Genetically Modified Foods (GMO foods) are genetically modified organisms that have had new genes from other organisms added to their existing genes.
Although GMOs were put to use in the past, the modern findings of GMOs and transgenic plants have emerged only a few decades ago. In 1980, scientists discovered that certain parts of DNA could be relocated from one organism to another. This discovery later became the backbone of the genetic modification process. “In 1983, the first transgenic plant, a tobacco plant resistant to anti-biotics, was created” (Cramer, 2001). Then in 1988, the prime biotech company, Monsanto, revealed herbicide-immune soybeans, acknowledged as “Round-Up-Ready”. U.S.A. currently is the leader of the world in GM agricultural technology; GM ingredients are found in around eighty percent of all packaged products sold at markets and convenience stores. Despite opposition from those who view GM foods as “health risks”, many agree that GM foods can definitely create a crucial, continual, and friendly way to feed the world. This use of technology is an invaluable asset not only for the farmers, who are now under pressure to produce more for the underprivileged, but also for communities
