Every single day in America, 297 people are shot. Out of those 297 people, 89 of them die. On average, 31 of those people are murdered, 55 kill themselves, 2 are killed unintentionally, 1 is killed by police intervention, and 1 the purpose is unknown (Brady Campaign). The United States has a large issue on its hands and it has been in the public’s view for decades. This issue is whether or not to develop additional gun control laws. Due to several recent mass shootings and the presidential race, several people in the United States are starting to look into gun control and trying to develop their opinion on this hot subject. Some major aspects about gun control that the public has shown concern about are the legality of owning an assault weapon and excessive ammunition, the promotion of mental health care reform, and the loopholes in buying and selling firearms. So, what does everyone really mean when they talk about gun control? Gun control is defined as “regulation of the selling, owning, and use of gun” (Gun Control). There have been many gun control laws that have already been passed like the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968, that implemented stricter licensing and regulation on the firearms industry, established new categories of firearms offenses, and prohibited the sale of firearms and ammunition to felons and certain other prohibited persons, and the Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act of 1994, that stated any seller of handguns had to wait 5 days before selling a handgun to an unlicensed person.
