Despite the positive impact that it would likely have on classroom discipline, the idea of teachers and administrators carrying firearms is awful. Guns and schools are not usually associated with each other, but when they are, it’s often under tragic circumstances (Handford, 2008). The shootings at Columbine High School in April 1999, Virginia Tech University in 2007, and Northern Illinois University in 2008 have one thing in common: armed students gunning down their unarmed classmates. (Kleck & Kates, 2001). All are school shootings and tragic incidents caused by a gun on a school campus in the hands of the wrong person. Violence no matter where it occurs is usually a traumatic, tragic event, but when it happens in our schools, to our children, it is an extraordinarily shocking occurrence (Cool, 2010). This could lead to a dangerous situation if students are allowed to have firearms in their rooms. Having a CD, iPad, or iPod stolen is one thing, but having a gun stolen is another story. In cases such as this, students without guns would be more likely to contact campus police than to take matters into their own hands. Every school campus has a police department that is comprised of Certified Peace Officers who are commissioned to protect students and teachers from any potential threat on campus. With a gun in or at hand, teachers and students may be more prone to take actions that could result in more deadly effects. (Handford, 2008).
