A Decision of Paramount Importance
At what point do we finally decide to take the first step in improving safety in public schools around the nation? This is the question that should be asked when a state attempts to determine whether or not the teachers of Kansas public schools who are lawfully permitted to carry a concealed firearm should be allowed to carry them into their classrooms. This is a controversial subject that is rather split in terms of the opinions of the people. In an online survey from debate.org, approximately 53% of people said that teachers should be allowed to carry firearms for several reasons such as protection of the students and deterrence of crimes. Those who opposed teachers being allowed to carry firearms said that it would increase violence because a lot of things could go wrong. In the past 2 years alone, there have been at least 160 school shootings in the United States. This is a massive number that could easily be diminished if not completely eliminated if teachers had the ability to carry concealed weapons into their schools. In the event of an attacker entering a school, the building would go into lockdown. This would give the teachers enough time to safely get their students and themselves into the safest position possible. Then, the teacher would be able to protect the class by shooting the attacker which would prevent deaths and help the students to feel safer in their environment because they know they can be protected in case of an attack. Another factor would be that if students are aware that there is a law in place in the state of Kansas, they will be a lot more wary of even considering attacking the school.
