According to the Covenant House, “almost 40% of the homeless in the United States are under eighteen”, and, as stated by the 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report, about 550,000 people are homeless in the USA. That means that over 200,000 children are considered homeless as of 2017. Lastly, in an article written by the Williams Institute School of Law, 40% of homeless youth are LGBT+. Not only that, but according the articlecomma?, “Nearly seven in ten (68%) respondents indicated that family rejection was a major factor contributing to LGBT youth homelessness”. While laws such as the Fair Housing act, and the HUD rules for federally-funded housing, along with many state and local laws, its surprising how shelters get away with trying to reject LGBT people from their shelters. Not only that, but charities like the Salvation Army have actively tried to oppose gay rights in history. Many LGBT people still face discrimination in most of the country, being denied entry into a shelter or being told that they deserve to die from anti-LGBT charities. From a study done by the CDC in 2015, only 14.8 percent of heterosexual students have seriously considered suicide, while 42.8 percent of LGB students have seriously considered it. Not only that, but 11.9 percent of heterosexual students have made a plan, while 38.2 percent of LGB students have also made a plan. This may be a result of how much discrimination they face, and society needs to stop focusing only on themselves, and start caring about other people, whether it be donating a couple dollars to a charity, helping LGBT+ people find a place to stay, or even confronting someone for being discriminatory against LGBT+ youth.
