We live in a culture of individualism where it is popular for people fight for equal rights and against social injustice. As people crusade for different causes one near to my heart seems to get overlooked. The issue of human trafficking is a horrible truth in our world today and while certain governments and organizations are working towards its end until more people/ individuals join the fight and spread awareness it will be prevalent. It is possible that people push this issue aside because they do not like to dwell on the grotesque reality of humans using and abusing other humans in this way and because people feel ill equipped to do something about it they prefer not to think about or discuss it.

Prevention methods are unreliable and prosecution is difficult when lines are blurred between consent and coercion. With our society’s idea that anyone can do anything, individuality and freedom, and that an individual can make a real change in the world you’d think that many would be discussing and taking action to rid our world of this tragedy. But like the abolition of slavery in the 18th century there seem to be many who agree that Human Trafficking needs to stop but few who actually do anything about it. Lobbying governments for more laws and repercussions is crucial to this fight but what may be more effective is if we as individuals fight to see others as individuals, to notice when those close to us are in dangerous situations, to educate others on trafficking and discuss viable options. However, those around me seem to shy away from the hard topics of conversation because they don’t feel there is an immediate answer or they feel like it isn’t a big issue. Misinformation or just plain ignorance is not an excuse to sit back and let people be used and
